Problems With the Autism Hub Feed?

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Does any one else have their posts disappear from Autism Hub if you edit your post after the hub reads up your feed? I’m not sure if it is just me or not so I didn’t want to bug Kevin if it was just my feed as I need to bang on my blog install a bit anyway… Thanks.

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Aspie Musician in OZ

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

I’m not really sure what to think about this. I do not know anything about their music.

Refreshed Vine back in the limelight [Sydney Morning Herald]
Four years ago the Vines were the hottest rock band in the world, lauded in the US as the face of the “new rock” movement, selling more than a million of their debut album, Highly Evolved, and filling large venues internationally only months after playing in tiny Sydney pubs.

Nicholls, the singer and songwriter, was seen as an entertainingly eccentric figure whose odd behaviour was ascribed to copious ingestion of marijuana and a manic pop personality.

That was until, at the same time a second album, Winning Days, was failing to match expectations in 2004, the behaviour went from odd to violent, from abusing docile fans in Japan to kicking out at a photographer’s camera in Sydney.

It was only then, as the band took a lengthy break from public view, that Nicholls was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a milder form of autism. His difficulty with crowds, with being interviewed and even with being touched, finally had a reason. “It made a lot of sense to me … It was kind of a relief. It was more like an explanation,” Nicholls said. (more emphasis added –ed.)

There are some other articles on Nicholls’ Asperger’s here, here, and here.

Being Aspie does not explain the violence. Being overwhelmed, sure, I have been and will be there, but that doesn’t justify being an asshole. That probably makes me sound like an old, old man. Heh. Anyway, being an asshole is not in my DSM IV. Still, I can’t help but wonder what kind of ‘treatment’ he is getting as an adult.

Yeah, that post title sucks.

Combating the Combating Autism Act [Rettdevil]

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Like many of you (i suspect) today I had some email from ASA, encouraging me to write to my senators regarding the Combating Autism Act. Except they’re wanting us to acvocate for a War on Autism™.

Heh. Rettdevil and Spockette beat me to the punch and thus, so totally rock.

Check it out, write your senators (or use the form letter that Spockette so kindly provided, which mocks the ASA one so well it’s scary).

Surfing the Heat Wave

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

We are back.

I did wish to note that all three of us have returned from our brief vacation, though I really have not had much to say in regards to autism and thus not posting here. We spent a lot of time with the AspieGrandparents as planned, but not so much outside, which was not planned. After we left central Nevada [with highs in the low 90s at Lehman Caves at Great Basin National Park] and headed East we reentered the hot beast’s belly and wilted appreciably.

Temps in excess to 115°F are too hot to recreate with much élan or vigor. ;-)

Vacation Time II

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Tomorrow (july 14) we’re departing on a driving vacation out here in the desert West. Back for sure on the 23rd (Sunday). Hopefully there will be some updates. Until then, be well.
