We Meet the Teachers

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

The three of us took a bit of time this morning to acquaint AspieBoy with his new school and classroom. One (of many) pluses is that his new school was built on the identical floor plan to last year’s school, so we had that familiarity going for us. :-)

AspieMom and I came away feeling really positive about both the teacher and the aide. Both seemed very present and aware (I’m not sure if that makes sense) unlike AspieBoy’s Teacher’s aide from last year. His previous teacher was excellent, the aide — not so much.

The aide he will have this year — WOW! She suggested we visit the shaded (yea!) playground area outside and was casually assessing his motor skills and language as we were talking so she had an idea of what to expect tomorrow. She was using professional terms and assessment criteria, too. Not just a warm body! YEA!

It really made us feel good about leaving our (not so) little boy with the two of them for several hours a day.

Whew!

Call Off the Search Patrol

Monday, August 28th, 2006

We’re still here, just very (pre)occupied with the start of college and Aspie Boy’s Early Intervention classes at Elementary School. I have been following along on things Hub-related and wishing I had the mental space to comment… Great stuff folks.

It Happens Every Year About This Time…

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

This year L gives way to LI.

Nothing of shattering import to the autism community, but, it’s my birthday. Long ago the fire marshall advised a move to symbolic representation on the cake. For those keeping track, that would be 51 candles this year…

Nothing much planned, I mean, I’m going to go to work like usual…

And I don’t feel a day over 50! :-)

At any rate, Happy Birthday to me!

[update:] Amanda’s birthday was yesterday…

Podcasts…

Friday, August 11th, 2006

I have been trying to catch up on the firehose of podcasts I keep downloading, but not listening to. Two really pleasant surprises have been getting to listen (and not just read) to Kassiane (Rett Devil) and two from Autism Diva, both from the Autism Podcast.

No real reason for the quiet here, just ‘chopping wood and carrying water.’

Outside Looking ‘Inside Autism’

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

As further evidence of just how well developed the large media’s morbid fascination is with us Autistics, the first installment of CNN’s week-long series Inside autism is up.

Bad sign #1: a prominant and direct link to the “Autism Speaks” video

Bad sign #2: abundant use of quotes that include “[receiving the diagnosis was] probably the most devastating thing I’ve ever been through in my entire life,” “I didn’t choose this. I was drafted. I have an autistic child” and “parents of children with autism are experts too because they live with the disorder 24 hours a day.” More hand-wringing to come, I’m sure.

No mention of “how to stem the epidemic” yet. I’m sure it is coming…
